Question:
I would like to install the conditioning on the 1st floor of my house with 2 floors. I have casement windows that style Swing Out so I can not install a window unit. I could install central air conditioning, but I do not use the 2nd floor of the house. The windows are 10 yr old Anderson. Should I replace 1 window with a window Double hung so I could take in an air conditioner or go to the central air?
Answer:
My first choice for energy efficiency and overall comfort, would be to install a central air conditioning. These systems can be "zoned" so they can cool a room of the house and not both. However, you must plan on two and discuss with your contractor in May as it was less expensive to install some pipes "get ready" to cool the floor at some point in the future.
Another option might be to install a through-the-wall air conditioning unit. Many of the larger units are available with wall mounted sleeves. To install, you will need to cut a hole in the exterior wall and frame it the same way you would frame an opening for a window or door. It is very important to do properly because you will affect the structural integrity of the house. Also, this type of system will very probably cause loss of heat in winter because it is very difficult to seal to prevent leakage of cold air in.
A better option that cost-wise is between the cost of a central system and a through-the-wall mounted phones, may be without air conditioning ducts. With ductless air conditioning, you have a wall fan that hangs on the wall inside your house. This is linked by a refrigerant line to a small compressor is outside, as a central system. The compressor provides a refrigerant Inside blower, which circulates cooled air.
Given the above, my choice would be (1) Central (2) Ductless, (3) through the wall.
