Far infrared saunas are getting a lot of attention these days. Even Oprah recently featured on an anti-aging show with Dr. Oz as a way to burn up 700 calories in one session.

According to Dr. Oz, a FIR sauna can also help you to detox and even lower blood pressure.

But what exactly is far infrared sauna (also called the FIR sauna)? And how is it different the traditional saunas? Here's a quick overview of what you need to know.

First, FIR saunas use radiant heat (infrared) which is similar Heat from the sun (without the harmful UV rays).

This heat penetrates the tissues of the body deeper (up 2 inches) of a traditional sauna and helps you to sweat faster. Radiant heat heats the user directly and not the air.

The advantage of this is that you sweat more - but at temperatures much lower than a traditional sauna (FIR Sauna example, range from 120 F 150 degrees whereas a traditional sauna, go degrees F 185 to 195).

Because you do not need to be hot as a traditional sauna to get a sweat yet, you can stay longer and get more efficient sauna - with more calories burned and more effects detoxification.

Unlike traditional saunas that use rocks, water and steam, the machine uses FIR none of this. You use just the electrical panel to be programmed in time and the desired temperature, wait for it to warm up (which takes about 10-25 minutes) leave.

FIR saunas are usually placed in the home, whereas traditional saunas are often placed outside.

FIR saunas are prefabricated and are often much easier to put together than traditional saunas (my husband put our home sauna infrared and in less than an hour). In addition, most FIR saunas (not all) can easily be plugged into a standard electrical outlet while many saunas traditional need a dedicated circuit breaker.

Some manufacturers even state that the FIR sauna use less electricity or are less expensive than traditional saunas.

Overall, these benefits have led to a rise in popularity to the far infrared saunas - they offer a warmth deeper and more profound results detox, burn mega calories and are easier to assemble. Also, if you move, you can easily take your sauna down and move it with you.

It should be noted that a meeting of far infrared sauna feels very different from a traditional sauna. It's much softer. So if you like steam, rocks and suffers from high heat you may want stick with a traditional sauna. However many people prefer the lower, the gentle heat of a unit of FIR.
