Kori Swamp

Kori Swamp

Uganda used to be a home to thousands of rhinos, but due to extensive poaching during the years of the civil unrest Didi Amini, the last rhino was killed in 1982. The Rhinos have been hunted for their valuable horns and many of them are dead.

Efforts are now made by Rhino Fund Uganda to reintroduce the rhinos to their homelands.

Rhinos Uganda include the white South, the white North and the black community and these species are currently threatened with extinction and are present in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongora along the road to Gulu. The southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum) are six in number in this sanctuary.

Taleo is the dominant male and spends some time with the rest of the rhino, but he spends too much time wandering in the sanctuary of his own and marking his territory.

Moja is the second in command and male dominance is where Taleo is not with the other rhinos. Sometimes, Moja and fight for dominance Taleo Taleo, but still the rhino sanctuary dominant.

Bella was the first woman to become pregnant. Unfortunately, it a calf was stillborn March 13, 2008. She is pregnant again, due in October 2009.

Kori is being courted by Moja and Taleo and She is doing well.

In August 2006, Hassani and Nandi, a brother and sister, arrived in the United States as a gift from the Animal Kingdom Disney. The Rhinos quickly became comfortable with their new place and new friends.

Nandi gave birth to a baby boy on June.24th.2009 Rhino is the first to give birth to live calves in 25 years due to political unrest Amini.

The rhinos move freely in an area of 70 square km (about twice the size of the Mgahinga National Park) Combretum composed of dry savanna, laced with swamps and cactus like candelabra euphorbia trees.

The rhinos spend most of their time together, except for Taleo explores Out, and formed a very close family. They spend their mornings and evenings grazing for food. In afternoon when the sun is hotter, they find shade trees to rest under or go to the marsh to roll around and wallow in the mud.
